Solid Conservatory Roof Replacement

Solid Conservatory Roof Replacement

What is a Solid Conservatory Roof Replacement?

During the summer, traditional conservatories with polycarbonate or glass roofs get unbearably hot. The situation is much worse in winter, when the thin roof cannot retain heat, and you need to keep the heater constantly on to use the space.

We replace that thin glazing with a solid ceiling that has layered insulation. We add external tiles that give the roof a conventional look while, functionally, keeping your space cool in summer and warm in winter.

Primary features:

    • Removes the old thin roof and replaces it with a solid one
    • Uses Celotex and SuperQuilt as super-insulation
    • Uses UPVC or plasterboard and skim for the internal ceiling
    • Externally, a high-quality membrane and tiles are used to match the property

This roof replacement turns a conservatory that can only be used seasonally into a comfortable living space year-round.

Why Your Conservatory Needs a Solid Roof

Thin or conventional conservatories use materials like polycarbonate or glass, which are highly conductive, allowing heat to enter and exit easily. A solid roof replacement in conservatories is necessary to give the space a high thermal resistance.

Here are the main reasons you need a solid conservatory roof replacement:

  1. Extreme Cold in Winter

If the roof material is highly conductive, they don’t provide much insulation. This leads to freezing temperatures in winter. Even with the heating turned on, the space may feel like an icebox. A solid roof with proper insulation solves this issue.

  1. Greenhouse Effect in Summer

Whether it is polycarbonate or glass, the thin traditional roofs allow summer heat to enter the conservatory, and internal temperatures can rise above 40°C, far above the favourable 19 to 22°C. Quality insulation can help keep internal temperatures within that range.

  1. Moisture Problem

Water droplets form when warm indoor air comes into contact with the freezing-cold surfaces of an uninsulated roof. It eventually leads to various issues, such as mould, cold patches, and musty odours. We stop that with heavy-duty insulation.

  1. Pressure on Heating Systems

As the thin roof makes the conservatory cooler than the rooms, you mostly need to use heating to keep the space usable. But as the roof is letting much of the heat out, it constantly pushes the system to do more. This leads to a massive energy drain (36% more than insulated ones).

  1. UV Damage

If you have a glass roof, you now know that it was not a good idea, as the harsh UV rays are damaging to anything under constant exposure, whether it’s flooring, furniture, curtains, or carpets. Having a solid roof solves this problem immediately.

  1. Overwhelming Rain Sound

Rain sound can be calming, but not when it is a heavy downpour on a thin roof that prevents most from having easy conversations or watching TV at a regular volume. Our solid tiles can reduce this noise by up to 95% and let you relax or focus without distractions.

How We Replace Your Conservatory Roof

We follow a simple installation process that centres around the customer’s needs and complete satisfaction.

1. Free On-Site Assessment & Quote

Once you call us or fill out the form on our website, we schedule a free on-site assessment. On that day, we will visit your home, assess the conservatory’s current condition, and discuss it with you. We discuss every little detail, including the materials we will use and your vision for the space. Then we give you a clear quote.

3. Removal of Old Roof

We start the work by placing dust covers and temporarily relocating furniture. Then we carefully remove the old roof.

2. Timeline Is Determined

At this time, we have clearly conveyed what you are getting, and once the contract is firm, we will fix a start date. We also provide a realistic timeline for project completion.

4. Building the Solid Insulated Roof

Once the glazed glass or polycarbonate layer is taken off, we install the 50mm Celotex insulation panels. Then we treat fire-rated timber battens both internally and externally. After that, we use 19mm layers of SuperQuilt insulation blanket to build a superior heat-reflection system. Once all this is in place, we add a solid ceiling base underneath.

5. Internal and External Finishing

For the interior finish, we have options: UPVC or plasterboard and skim. For the exterior finish, we first lay a waterproof membrane, then cover it with tiles that complement your property well.

6. Clean Up and Handover

Once the roof is replaced with a solid, insulated one, we start our cleanup. Then we bring the furniture back and organise the space to your wish. We end the work with another discussion with you. We ensure that you are satisfied with all aspects of our work.

Materials in Your Solid Conservatory Roof Replacement

At Midlands Insulated Conservatory, we believe that quality makes the difference. That’s why we use high-quality, branded products, which are the latest upgrades on the market.

Thermal Comfort and Efficiency

  • Super Quilt Insulation

The 19-layer multifoil insulation we use is highly effective at reflecting radiant heat. It reflects solar heat away in summer and keeps the space warm in winter. This is the key to making the room usable in all seasons.

  • Plasterboard (Vapour-board)

These boards prevent warm, moist air from the home from reaching the colder parts of the roof because they are specially treated with a water-repellent backing. This is a key component that prevents structural damage within the roof cavity and mould growth.

  • Skylight

When we replace your glass roof with a solid roof, you may lose some natural light. That’s why many of our clients ask us to install a skylight. We use high-quality skylights to ensure that the room remains airy and bright.

Core Structure and Weatherproofing

  • Treated Battens

These timber battens provide a secure foundation for the outer tiles. They are also essential for creating an airflow gap. These are pressure-treated, so they are immune to insect damage, rot, and fungus, which keeps your roof structure solid for a long time.

  • OSB 18mm

This 18mm-thick, heavy-duty board serves as a deck capable of supporting the weight of the tiles and snow loads. They also act as a natural vapour control layer, which helps you further control moisture.

  • Roof Membrane

Beneath the tiles lies a high-performance, breathable membrane, the final waterproof barrier against wind-driven rain. However, it allows internal moisture to escape, which is super helpful in preventing timber decay and condensation.

Benefits of a Solid Conservatory Roof Replacement

If you have a polycarbonate or glazed-glass conservatory roof right now, you have a space that’s only usable seasonally. Once we make it solid and insulated, it becomes a room you can use anytime without discomfort – just like your other rooms.

1. All-Year Thermal Comfort

A solid, insulated roof acts as a barrier to solar heat gain and reflects heat away, which keeps the room cool during the summer. Those same layers also retain heat, which works like a charm in winter. The solid structure also blocks direct sunlight, which is very helpful when you are working on a laptop or watching TV.

2. Great for Saving Energy

According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), solid roofing can reduce energy consumption by 25%. How? A solid roof removes your need to use heaters to keep the place warm. Moreover, our solid systems achieve U-Values as low as 0.13-0.14 (the lowest on the market), which means super efficiency.

3. External Noise Reduction

This is one of the most noticeable benefits of using a solid roofing, especially for thermal regulation. Polycarbonate panels are notorious for their deafening noise in the rain. Our insulated conservatory roofs reduce that noise 90% and create a more peaceful interior environment.

4. Increased Property Value

If a genuine investment in your property’s value is also something that interests you, a high-quality, solid roof replacement is one of them because modern buyers value usable square footage. To buyers, a thermally efficient room is far more valuable than just a seasonal conservatory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Just like any other structure, a conservatory also needs a proper foundation. Proper foundations are necessary to keep the building stable and prevent long-term deterioration. Even if you are looking at a single-story conservatory, it should sit on a solid base built to the correct depth and strength.

An insulated conservatory roof can reduce heat loss by up to 90%. Whether you currently have a glass or polycarbonate roof, both let internal heat escape and cool the space during winter. The insulation prevents most of the heat from escaping outside and keeps the inside warm and comfortable. It will feel closer to the temperature of the rest of your home, so that you can use it not only in winter but all year round.

Yes, you can choose the colour and style of the roof tiles to create contrast or exactly match your existing house roof. Our team will show you options and help you pick styles that blend perfectly with the rest of the property.
